10 Benefits to Training in Martial Arts

Discipline

Learning Martial Arts requires a great deal of discipline from you.  Discipline to do what is needed to improve overall, both in martial arts skill and as person.  Through martial arts training and exercise students follow a regimen that develops and improves their self-discipline.  This discipline building will carry over to other aspects of your life.  In the long run, it will help you build the discipline needed to reach any goals you have.

Setting and achieving goals

Learning Martial arts is a marathon, not a sprint. Setting and achieving small goals will be necessary to improve and learn. You will be forced to set and try to achieve goals on a daily basis.  The belt rank system in martial arts is an excellent example of measuring progress for students with their goals.  In Jiu Jitsu students earn four stripes on each belt leading up to black belt.   These provide great short term goals for students to mark their progress as they move through the belt rank system.

Learn Respect

In martial arts, you will learn respect very quickly on the mat.  Students learn about respecting their training space, fellow students, and instructors.  A common example of demonstrating respect is signified by bowing to your instructor and fellow students.   This is typically learned on day one at most martial arts schools.  The respect that is taught and demonstrated in class carries over to your everyday life.

Build Focus

Martial arts requires a great amount of focus to learn and apply techniques correctly and safely.  Focus is a skill that is improved over time.   As you improve your skills and become more self-aware, so does your ability to block out thoughts and hone in on the task at hand.  As you learn more and hone your focus, you will again realize this trait in everyday life.

Relieve Stress

Martial Arts is a great way to shake off the day’s stresses through physical activity.  For many students they report that stress relief is the number one benefit they gain through training.   Martial arts training is an excellent opportunity to forget about the worries of work, school, and everyday life.

Self-Defense

The main focus of Martial Arts is the instruction of self-defense. You will learn how to defend yourself and your family in the event of confrontation.  Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Muay  Thai Kickboxing are two of the most effective martial arts systems in the world.   Both styles are commonly studied by many of the best mixed martial arts fighters.   These styles are the two systems taught at the Pendergrass Academy of Martial Arts.

Confidence

Martial Arts builds confidence in oneself that can carry over to your life.  As in any skill building exercise, the advancement of students in martial arts provides an increase in confidence.  Kids often times are the biggest benefactors of gaining confidence and improving their self-esteem through martial arts.   Adults too report huge gains in confidence which many times spills over to work and social settings.

Team building

When you join a martial arts school, you will become part of a team that helps each other to learn and grow in the journey.  Though everyone that trains in martial arts are from different backgrounds, they have one common goal and purpose which is to learn martial arts.   Through working with your training partners the natural progress of team building occurs.  With any martial arts the need to work effectively with your training partner is a must and will provide you the opportunity to improve.

Social Skills

When training martial arts, you will meet new people and interact with them.  The martial arts school environment provides an excellent opportunity for students to learn and practice basic social skills.   Children learn many important character development traits including interacting with their peers and adults.

Anti-Bully Education

Students learn many important lessons through martial arts training.   One of the most important is the ability to deter and if necessary stand up to bullies.  Bullying is a national epidemic and an issue that needs to be addressed with children of all ages.   At the Pendergrass Academy of Martial Arts we take all our students through specific steps and strategies to dealing with bullies.
