Benefits of Training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai Kickboxing

Many people begin their journey in the martial arts for different reasons.  Some for fitness, some for self discipline, and others for self defense.  In this four part series we will look at the top four benefits from training in the martial arts.   The first benefit we will cover is Physical Fitness.

Physical Fitness: A Transforming Journey

The #1 reason we hear at our academy of why someone wants to start martial arts is to become for physically fit.  Martial Arts can be a vessel to improved health through regular physical activity that provides the same benefits as any gym.  The one key thing that martial arts academies can provide that gyms don’t are constant engagement and encouragement in group settings.  Your fellow students and instructors want to see you succeed.  How many times have you gone to train at a gym and felt like you were on your own?

There are 3 main areas that a student of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai Kickboxing will benefit from.

Cardio:  The first and most noticeable difference new students will see is an improvement in their cardio.  They find that they do not give out of breath so easily.  They are able to last much longer at activities that they normally would “gas out” during.  The aerobic benefit that the martial arts brings is tremendous.  Traditionally Muay Thai Kickboxing is a superb workout for those wanting to increase their cardio.  Muay Thai instructors train it’s practitioners to last and last during their training and fights.  They implement many exercises that will accomplish this goal such as running, jumping ropes, bag and pad work for set periods of time, and all the other exercises like mountain climbers that burn fat and increase the heart rate.

Strength:  Another area of improvements that many students note is an increase in strength.  Through rigorous exercise you will see a tremendous increase in strength through various means which include calisthenics, solo and partner drills, and sparring.    Both Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai Kickboxing have their own unique drills and workouts specific to those styles to increase strength.  Brazilian Jiu Jitsu will use grappling oriented drills such as  guard passing drills to increase overall body strength.  Muay Thai Kickboxing may use push ups and ab work that are crucial to the techniques found in Muay Thai.

Flexibility: One of the other most common areas of improvements is increase in flexibility.  Improved flexibility will not only improve your martial arts technique, but will also improve your overall physical health and functioning in every day life.  Through consistent warm-ups and stretching in each class, students find improved levels of overall flexibility!

We hope you found this article useful and we look forwarding to sharing with you the next part in this series.  In the next part we will cover the Mental Benefits of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai Kickboxing.
