Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai Kickboxing – Mental Benefits

In the first part of our new series on why to train in the martial arts we discussed the Physical Benefits of participating in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai Kickboxing.  Next, we dive into what many equate to being the second greatest byproduct of training in the martial arts, the Mental Benefits.  Below we will discuss the most common mental benefits of training in the martial arts.

Mental Benefits
• Improved self-image and self-esteem: Regular training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai Kickboxing are great forms of exercise and in turn often help many students to to get in shape and transform their bodies, which will make  a student feel more confident.   Also, participation in the martial arts boosts self esteem through the techniques that are practiced and mastered, as well as, the progression of rank after mastering the technique.
• Increased self-confidence and positive attitude: “Competence Builds Confidence”  As mentioned above, the mastery of technique in a well designed curriculum will guide the student in learning and progressing their martial art skills.  In Muay Thai or any kind of martial art, a good player in the game must have supreme self-confidence that one could successfully complete various maneuvers to make timely and sudden decisions.
• Greater Self-Discipline and a “Can Do” Attitude: Practicing in the martial arts requires a great degree of determination.  Not only does one need self discipline on a daily basis at practice, but also over the long haul as it takes years to perfect technique and master the martial arts.
• Improved concentration, work and study habits: One of the benefits that comes along with training is the increase in concentration levels and how it carries over into other aspects of a students life.  The same skills needed to focus during class to comprehend, dissect, perform, and master a complex set of moves are the same skills needed at school, work, and life in general.
• Stress reduction and increased levels of relaxation: Regular exercises are very important in Muay Thai and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.  Being in the best shape you can be not only helps with performing the technique but also has a tremendous impact on your health and is great form on stress reduction.  While in class one must be able to relax and let the technique flow.  Also, being able to leave your worries at the door and train for an hour not only helps the body but puts the mind at ease.                                                                                                                                      Courage: Training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai Kickboxing brings a certain level of confidence and knowledge that you are able to protect yourself or stand up for what you believe in.  This can be in a physical situation against a bully or  a meeting at work to present that new proposal to your boss.                                                                                                                                                                                               • Mental Toughness: As mentioned above and in the prior post increased physical fitness is a superb benefit to training.  As a result, the body will be driven to the limit of exhaustion.  If you do not have stamina and determination, you will certainly give up, so it is necessary to train the mind be tough.
