Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai Kickboxing – Social Benefits

In our first two posts on the Benefits of Training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai Kickboxing we looked at two of the greatest benefits that most people think of when it comes to training in the martial arts.  First was the Physical Fitness Benefits.  We looked at and explored all the ares of physical fitness that are improved through regular exercise in the art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai Kickboxing.  Second, we looked at the Mental Benefits.  The martial arts is highly regarding as a mental discipline to over come extra ordinary feats.  The ability to control ones mind carries over into the physical aspect, school, work and so much more.

Social Benefits

For many adults the thought of starting a martial arts program can be intimidating.  This is even more so for kids.  Remember back when you were in elementary school and everything seemed so big.  Years later as an adult when you revisit that school it seems so small from what you remembered in your mind.  Now, envision a 7 year old walking up to a martial arts academy and imagine how they feel when they see a large building full of other kids running around in “pajamas” (this is what my wife calls it) making all kinds of noises and doing self defense moves on each other.

As nerve racking as this can be the benefits of enrolling in one of these programs can be life altering.  One of the greatest benefits to enrolling into a martial arts program is the improvement of the social skills.  Below we will discuss a few of the top social benefits we see kids and adults acquire and use in daily life.

  • Self Esteem:  Through goal setting and progressing through the ranks self-esteem begins to soar.  As mentioned in the article for Mental Benefits a child with high self-esteem will definitely have greater social skills and feel confident to tackle any social situation they are presented with.
  • Self Control: Kids who participate in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai Kickboxing learn how to not only control their body but also their behavior in many social situation.  Within a martial arts class kids must conform to traditional etiquette (ex. bowing on and off the mat, bowing to the instructor, etc…).  This is a byproduct of the Respect that is taught and adhered to during class.
  • Respect:  A student must learn the customs of the martial art style, protocol for behavior within the training facility, and proper conduct with fellow students and the instructor.
  • Diversity:  For kids and adults being in a group exposes them to others with a common goal and purpose, but also who may be from a different background.  Learning from others and working together toward a common interest teaches students important lessons.
  • Leadership:  One of the greatest benefits from training is the ability to set and achieve goals.  As student moves through the rank they are given the opportunity to become leaders to not only new students but their peers as well.  Many move on to help teach and influence others around them with the skills and knowledge they have acquired.
  • Making New Friends and Camaraderie:  For adults and kids alike meeting and making new friends is only natural.  Everyone is there to help each other and this spawns new friendships and a great environment for encouragement and growth.
  • Teamwork:  To achieve goals and move throughout the ranks all students must work together.  Without teamwork no one can progress and make the ultimate goal, black belt.
  • Discipline: It takes a great amount of self control to set and achieve goals to obtain a black belt.  It also takes a great amount of discipline to only use your Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai Kickboxing skills when you need to.

These benefits will lead to the possession of good manners, good spirit, honesty, sense of justice, and self-confidence.  In our last article on the benefits of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai Kickboxing we will look into the Self Defense aspect.
